McLaren is a private team of British origin based in Woking, Great Britain. It is owned by the McLaren Group, whose shareholding is made up of the Bahrain crown and Mansour Ojjeh.
The McLaren team is one of the entities with the longest history in Formula 1, with a legacy that dates back to the 1966 season and a record of twelve Constructors' World Championship titles and eight Drivers' titles.
The founder of the project was Bruce McLaren , although the genius and intelligence of Ron Dennis were responsible for the backbone of the legendary status he enjoys today. Dennis arrived at McLaren in 1980 and left in 2016, disowned by the rest of the shareholders.
In the 1960s, McLaren was reasonably successful in its early days. Bruce McLaren got his first victory in Belgium in 1968 and Denny Hulme had another two victories before the end of the calendar, which elevated the entity to second position in the Constructors' World Championship.
In 1970, Bruce McLaren died in an accident at Goodwood and Teddy Mayer took over as manager of the team. They were hard years, but in 1972 and 1973 they resumed the path of victory. In 1974, they achieved their first Constructors' and Drivers' titles with Emerson Fittipaldi as their benchmark. In 1976, they repeated glory in the Drivers' Championship with James Hunt.
In 1980, McLaren was going through a crisis that led to the merger with Project 4, the Ron Dennis project. Dennis became a shareholder and Teddy Mayer sold his shares in 1982. Mansour Ojjeh became a partner in 1983.
In 1983, McLaren introduced the MP4/1 , the first single-seater with a carbon fiber monocoque. In 1984, 1985 and 1986, they won both the Constructors' and Drivers' Championships. Niki Lauda scored the first, while Alain Prost won the remaining two.
In 1988 and 1989, McLaren teamed up Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna to form what many consider to be the best line-up of all time. The rivalry between the Frenchman and the Brazilian was legendary and was accentuated by the competitiveness of their single-seaters, which allowed them to fight head-to-head without opposition from other rivals. Senna won the first World Cup, Prost the second.
With the turn of the decade, McLaren ceded technological leadership to the Williams team but still scratched a double in the 1990 and 1991 World Cups. They were hegemonic again in 1998 and 1999, this time with Mika Häkkinen as the first sword.
In 2000, McLaren lost its way and was hidden by the shadow of its archrival Ferrari, which dominated with an iron fist until 2004. Those from Woking regained the initiative in 2007, with Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton . The Spaniard and the British formed an explosive duo that only lasted a year, because the rivalry made it unsustainable. Alonso left and Hamilton won the World Cup in 2008.
Between 2010 and 2013, McLaren sees Red Bull dominate. In parallel, its historical technical partner -Mercedes- creates its own team. Ron Dennis sees his factory team status threatened and explores the market for alternatives. He convinces Honda to return to the sport in 2015.
The McLaren-Honda pairing was born with enormous expectations for the success of their first association -1988, 1992-, but the reality is very different. Honda needs time to prepare a competitive engine and fails season after season in its will to meet the demands of the team. McLaren gets the worst results in its history. Their union dissolved at the end of 2017 after three years of living together.
In 2019, the drivers Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris are running for Mclaren, replacing Fernando Alonso and Stofel Vandoorme.
