The Isle of Man TT , Tourist Trophy , International Isle of Man Tourist Trophy , Isle of Man TT and/or Manx TT is an international motorcycle competition that has been held since 1907 on the Isle of Man, on roads closed to traffic (Route from Snaefel Mountain). The race is done in time trial format.
It is considered one of the most dangerous motor competitions in the world, with more than 260 fatalities.
The senior class race is called the Senior TT. Grand Prix motorcycles of up to 500 cm³ competed there, until the TT Formula 1 regulations were adopted in 1985 and in 2005 Superbikes of 1000–1200 cm³. In the Senior TT Mike Hailwood has stood out with seven victories, John McGuinness with six and Giacomo Agostini with five.
The other classes are Superbikes TT (1000–1200 cm³), Superstock TT (1000–1200 cm³), Supersport TT (600–750 cm³), Lightweight TT (650 cm³) and Sidecar TT (600 cm³). In 2010 the TT Zero class was created, for electric motorcycles.
The first race took place on May 28, 1907 on a 10-lap course on a circuit of about 25.5 kilometers. The winner of this first edition in the one-cylinder category (and at the same time overall winner) was Charlie Collier, who, riding a Matchless, completed the route in 4 hours, 8 minutes and 8 seconds, achieving an average speed of 61.5 km/ h. The winner in the two-cylinder category was Rem Fowler, who, driving a Norton with a Peugeot engine, completed the circuit in 4 hours, 21 minutes and 52 seconds, achieving an average speed of 58.3 km/h.
The trophy awarded to the winner of that first edition was donated by the Marquis de Mouzilly, and represents the god Hermes. The trophy is currently awarded to the winner of the Senior category.
Currently (2019) it is considered one of the fastest and most dangerous motorcycling races, with more than 250 deaths. throughout its history and with speed averages above 200 km/h (for example, 208 km/h by John McGuinness in the Senior category) and peak speeds of 332 km/h.
