Fernando Alonso -Spain, 1981- is a two-time Formula 1 world champion driver and one-time WEC winner with the Toyota Gazzo Racing team who competed for the Aston Martin Formula 1 team. He is the most successful Spanish driver of all time. It leads the national statistics in races, points, victories, podiums, Pole Positions, fastest laps and titles, among other categories. During the 2020 season, he will run the Dakar rally trying to establish himself as the most complete driver in history.
Alonso does not require an introduction. His seniority makes him the most experienced man on the grid and he is recognized by both teammates and rivals, who point to him as one of the most complete talents of his generation.
His professional career has been marked by the two world championships he won with Renault, a WEC endurance championship with Toyota and by the battles he has waged in inferior conditions. His ability to perform above car level sets him apart from most of his contemporaries.
He started go-karting when he was three years old, with a go-kart that his father had originally created for his older sister. He reaped his first title in 1988, in the children's category of the Asturias championship. He won the contests of Galicia, the Basque Country and Asturias. Between 1993 and 1996, he won the Spanish championship four times in a row. That last season he was also proclaimed world champion. He had more international successes before the decade ended, attracting the attention of sponsors who accompanied him through the training categories.
His jump to single-seaters occurred at the end of 1998 with a test with a Formula Renault at the Circuit de Catalunya. The father of one of his old rivals in karting, Antonio García, had suggested to Adrián Campos that he summon him with a view to a possible incorporation of the Euro-Open Movistar team. After three days of practice, Fernando had already matched the times of Marc Gené.
Alonso signed with Adrián Campos in 1999 and in 2000 he caught the interest of Flavio Briatore. That year he made the leap to the prelude to Formula 1, Formula 3000. His team was Astromega, a regular Benetton-Renault quarry. He signed memorable performances that revealed that he had Formula 1 talent. He reached the premier class in 2001.
In his last stage he has tried to win twice in the American indy racing twice with Mclaren cars. He has also won the legendary 24 hours of Le Mans 2 times, winning with Toyota Gazzo Racing. During the 2022 season he has raced with the Alpine F1 team.
