Dunlop is a United Kingdom manufacturer of tires and rubber derivatives. Dunlop is currently 75% owned by GoodYear and 25% owned by Sumitomo Rubber Industries.
It is also a brand of tennis and paddle tennis rackets.
Scottish inventor John Boyd Dunlop founded the Dunlop Pneumatic Tire Company in 1888. The company developed the designs for bicycle tires, the production of which was diverted to other companies. In 1902, the Dunlop Rubber company was founded, which would be dedicated to the manufacture of tires, at the same time that it began to diversify its production with the emergence of the first automobiles and airplanes. Throughout the 1920s, discoveries in latex foam led Dunlop to produce everything from golf balls to tennis rackets.
After being accused of monopolistic practices after World War II and undergoing a merger with the Italian company Pirelli in the 1970s, Dunlop suffered financial problems and was bought by BTR in 1985. In the mid-1990s, the various divisions of Dunlop were sold to other business conglomerates.
Sumitomo Rubber Industries is a Japanese company of the Sumitomo Group, which had collaborated with Dunlop in the local market since 1909 and bought Dunlop's Japanese division in 1963. After Dunlop's bankruptcy, Sumitomo bought the rights to the tire brand . After changing the division's name to Dunlop Tires in 1997, it formed a joint venture with American Goodyear two years later, which it continues to this day. Thus, Sumitomo markets tires under the Dunlop brand in Asia, Africa and South America, while Goodyear uses the brand in North America, Europe and Australia.
In Argentina there is a company called Dunlop Argentina SA, which is dedicated to producing rubber articles that are not tires (transmission belts, conveyor belts, etc.) and has an important factory in the Buenos Aires town of Bella Vista, in the Partido de San Miguel, very close to the Bella Vista Station.
Dunlop was a supplier of tires to Formula 1 between 1950 and 1970, and then in the 1976 and 1977 seasons. The brand has recorded 83 victories, eight drivers' titles and nine constructors' titles. Dunlop tires are also used in endurance racing, touring cars and speed motorcycling.
