Michael Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut for the 7UP Jordan team at the Belgian Grand Prix, replacing Bertrand Gachot. Gachot had been arrested in Britain for an altercation with a taxi driver, which gave Michael the opportunity to make his debut.

Although Michael Schumacher had to retire from the race on the first lap due to a mechanical problem, his good performance in qualifying allowed him to immediately sign for the Benetton team for the last five races of the championship.

Schumacher closed a golden era in the world's top motor racing competition at the Interlagos Circuit, in the Brazilian Grand Prix . With those last laps he said goodbye and the following year he suffered the accident that still finds him hospitalized at his home in Geneva.

He won seven world championships and competed in a total of 306 Grand Prix. He won 91 races, stood on the podium on 155 occasions and won 68 pole positions . He set 77 fastest lap records and finished first on 5,111 laps.
